Scientific Interests:

The multidisciplinary research efforts of our group are focused on the development of molecular probes for in vivo imaging of tumours, mainly radiotracers for positron emission tomography (PET). This includes target and ligand identification, synthesis of analogues amenable to radiolabelling and their pharmacological characterization in vitro (enzyme inhibition kinetics, receptor binding studies, structure-activity relations, metabolic stability). Biomolecular targets are comprising tumour-related enzymes (e.g. matrix-modifying enzymes, key enzymes of the tumour microenviroment) and cell surface receptors. Ligand compound classes include small molecules and peptides. Employed radionuclides are mainly C-11, F-18 (small molecules) and Cu-64 (mainly peptides). Special emphasis is payed to radiolabelling, the characterization of the resulting radiotracers regarding their interaction with biomolecular target at the molecular, cellular and organismic levels and their metabolism in vivo. In collaboration with specialised colleagues, promising compounds are evaluated in vivo in mouse xenograft models using small animal PET imaging.
