The following researchers/laboratories are open to host a PROBio-Africa fellow. Note that fellows can also choose to go to laboratories not listed on this page.
If you are a researcher interested in becoming a host, please use the following form:

Name: van der Wel, Patrick
Name: van der Wel, Patrick (He / Him)
Research Area(s): Lipids, Molecular Biophysics, Protein Structure and Folding
Affiliation: University of Groningen
Country: Netherlands
Scientific Interests:
The Van der Wel lab at the University of Groningen specializes in the use of advanced solid-state NMR spectroscopy (complemented with other biochemical and biophysical techniques) to address research questions in biology and biochemistry. We have a few specific focus areas where we apply our advanced spectroscopy:
(1) Molecular basis of Huntington’s disease and other protein aggregation diseases.
(2) Protein-lipid interactions in context of mitochondrial membranes (in health and disease)
(3) Polysaccharides in the extracellular matrix and other biological contexts.
Our studies are strictly ‘in vitro’ using purified proteins (and other biomolecules). We typically try to reconstitute or recreate biomedical relevant contexts, based on e.g. protein aggregates or protein-lipid complexes, with proteins produced and purified in the lab. Students work on the protein biochemistry aspects, or they can work more on the spectroscopy, depending on the background and experience. Experience with protein biochemistry and/or spectroscopy is valuable to make a visit most successful, but we can discuss possible options and approaches.
For more information on our work and methods, please visit our website as noted above.
