Addressing the impact of high glucose microenvironment on the immunosuppressive characteristics of human mesenchymal stem cells

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a therapeutically efficient type of stem cells validated by their ability to treat many inflammatory and chronic conditions. The biological and therapeutic characteristics of MSCs can be modified depending on the type of microenvironment at the site of transplantation. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a commonly diagnosed metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia, which alters over time the cellular and molecular functions of many cells and causes their damage. Hyperglycemia can also impact the success rate of MSCs transplantation; therefore, it is extremely significant to investigate the effect of high glucose on the biological and therapeutic attributes of MSCs, particularly their immunomodulatory abilities. In this study, the authors explored the effect of high glucose on the immunosuppressive characteristics of human adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hAD-MSCs).

BAG3 regulates cilia homeostasis of glioblastoma via its WW domain

The authors compared BAG3 protein–protein interactions in either adherently cultured or stem-like cultured U251 GBM cells, and in line with BAG3’s putative role in regulating stem-like properties, identified interactors in sphere-cultured cells included different stem cell markers (SOX2, OLIG2, and NES), while interactomes of adherent BAG3-proficient cells indicated a shift toward involvement of BAG3 in regulation of cilium assembly (ACTR3 and ARL3).

Analysis of highly frequent point mutations in glycoprotein C, glycoprotein N, and nucleoprotein of CCHFV

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) is classified among the top 10 priority pathogens by World Health Organization. CCHFV belongs to Bunyaviridae family and negative sense ssRNA genome composed of three RNA segments: L, M, and S. RNA viruses show higher mutation rate as compared to DNA viruses. This study is focused on evaluating eight mutations in structural glycoproteins (Gc: 7 and Gn: 1) of M segment and seven mutations in NP of S segment.

Improving the capturing ability of swirl-based microfluidic chip by introducing baffle wall

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common and lethal cancer. ZNF687 has been disclosed to take part in diversified cancers’ progression by serving as a facilitator. However, the detailed regulatory functions of ZNF687 in the CRC have not been investigated. This work is planned to probe the impacts of ZNF687 on CRC progression.

When online citizen science meets teaching: Storyfication of a science discovery game to teach, learn, and contribute to genomic research

In the last decade, video games became a common vehicle for citizen science initiatives in life science, allowing participants to contribute to real scientific data analysis while learning about it. Since 2010, the authors scientific discovery game (SDG) Phylo enlists participants in comparative genomic data analysis. It is frequently used as a learning tool, but the activities were difficult to aggregate to build a coherent teaching activity. Here, they describe a strategy and series of recipes to facilitate the integration of SDGs in courses and implement this approach in Phylo.

She’s a teacher-scholar, researching vitamin transport and biochemistry education at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. As an active member of the education community, she has served on numerous committees of the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB).
