Symposium Overview

After a very engaging virtual first edition in 2021, this hybrid symposium on cell surface mechanics will bring together researchers across kingdoms of life interested in dynamic processes occurring at the cell surface. The focus will be on new technologies that empower studies of cell wall, cytoskeleton, and membrane biology, such as advanced imaging in in vitro and in vivo systems, as well as approaches combining molecular biology with computational and biophysical approaches.

The first edition started building a much-needed bridge between the wall and wall-less fields. This edition will cement that bridge, but turn the focus to the balance between keeping a particular cell morphology necessary for function, while allowing the dynamic processes that must occur at the cell surface. The goal is to inspire and induce collaborations across these communities to reach a comprehensive understanding of the biology at the cell surface, integrating cell wall, actin and membrane biochemistry, and biophysics with cell mechanics.

Topics

  • In vitro reconstitution of the cell surface
  • Cell surface in a single cell
  • Planetary mechanobiology
  • Cell surface mechanics in multicellular systems
  • Modelling the cell surface
