Retinal physiology: The vertebrate retina consists of two components: the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and the neural retina itself. The RPE that originates from the optic cup, is a monolayer of cells located between the photoreceptors of the neural retina and the choroidal capillaries. The neural retina consists of six distinct neural cell types organized in a perfectly layered structure. The main interest of this group is the determination of the factors involved in cell communication between RPE and neural retina. Most of the work currently underway is related to the study of RPE permeability that maintains metabolite concentrations and might protect neural retina from putative toxic molecules. The regulatory mechanisms of RPE phagocytic activity related with photoreceptor renewal maintaining the normal function of the retina, as well as the possible role of cholinesterases activities on retinal cell development are under study. In relation to retinal neurotransmission, we are concentrated on the characterization of glycine as a retinal neurotransmitter and the mechanisms that regulate its action. The techniques we use include determination of enzymatic activities, subcellular fractionation, immunohistochemistry.
