Researcher Name: Herrero, Laura (She / Her)
Research Area(s): Metabolism
Affiliation: University of Barcelona
Country: Spain
Scientific Interests:
Obesity is increasing alarmingly worldwide. In Europe, more than 50% of the population already have overweight or obesity and the increase is especially worrying in the childhood. Obesity is associated with the development of serious metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s and some types of cancer, among others.
Our group is interested in the search for new therapies against obesity and its associated metabolic diseases. We aim to study the mechanisms involved in how the progression of obesity generates dysfunction in different tissues such as white and brown adipose tissue, liver and muscle. The studies are carried out in transgenic mice, knockouts or in various types of primary cell cultures (hepatocytes and adipocytes), in established cell lines and in human samples from healthy or patients with obesity.
The students’ learning will consist of: 1) manipulation of experimental animals (mouse) where different techniques will be studied (glucose tolerance test, weight measurement, glucose, insulin and lipid levels in serum, organ dissection, virus injection for gene therapy, immunohistochemical analysis of tissues, etc.) 2) Obtaining primary cultures and manipulation of cell cultures and patient samples and 3) Molecular biology techniques to analyze DNA, RNA, proteins and metabolites (real time PCR, Western Blot, ELISA, etc.).
Thus, the LIPID METABOLISM IN OBESITY AND DIABETES’ GROUP is looking for graduated students in biomedical areas interested in the field of obesity and metabolic diseases to enroll into PhD and Postdoc positions (via application of a scholarship).
This offer applies to trainees/researchers eligible for the following fellowships
IUBMB Wood-Whelan Research Fellowships, IUBMB Early-Career Research Fellowships
