Researcher Name: Fernández Fernández, Álvaro (He / Him)
Research Area(s): Cell Biology
Affiliation: University of Oviedo
Country: Spain
Scientific Interests:
AU·SIS (“Autophagy & autosis”) began in 2023 as an emerging research group led by Álvaro F. Fernández, who has extensive experience in both autophagy and autosis, the main research topics of the lab.
Autophagy is a recycling process that helps cells survive. Paradoxically, this implies that it can both prevent the appearance of tumours (protecting healthy cells) and contribute to their progression (supporting cancer cells). Therefore, it is necessary to determine in which contexts it is interesting to promote or block the route. Thus, one of the objectives of AU·SIS is the identification of new autophagic markers in cancer so we can improve diagnosis and treatment in oncology.
Autosis is a type of cell death highly dependent on autophagy and the Na+/K+-ATPase pump. Described in 2013, it has been found in pathologies such as ischemia or anorexia nervosa. However, we still do not know its molecular mechanisms. Therefore, the other main objectives of AU·SIS is the molecular characterisation of autosis, so we can better understand its causes and regulation, and apply this new knowledge in the clinic.
Established in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of the University of Oviedo, AU·SIS is part of a university community of tradition (being founded in 1608) fully committed to research excellence (having been awarded the “HR Excellence in Research” seal). Furthermore, the Principality of Asturias, once an important industrial region in Spain, is currently seeking to promote research and innovation within an incomparable natural setting.
