The main research area in my lab concerns biochemical and physicochemical studies on proteins, in particular GTPases involved in ribosomal biogenesis and their implication in diseases known as ribosomopathies. These studies are relevant not only because ribosome synthesis is an essential process for the cells but also because of their impact on global protein expression. Studying the molecular basis of ribosomopathies will shed light at understanding how mendelian disorders in which every cell in the body has the same ribosome defects, present with clinical features that are tissue-specific. My team mainly study the inter-molecular interactions of the proteins SBDS and EFL1, mutated in the Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome, their effector biomolecules and alterations in their function resulting from mutations present in the disease. We also study the function of other ribosomal and translation GTPases such as Lsg1 and archaeal EF-2. All these GTPases act as molecular machines and one of our main interest is to elucidate the intra-molecular long-range interactions that trigger the conformational changes needed to perform their biological roles. Secondary research areas involve studying proteins of marine origin involved in silicon chemistry and the crystallization of proteins in the presence of electrical fields.
