Dear Colleagues,

Due to the coronavirus pandemic and after careful consideration, the IUBMB Focused Meeting / FEBS Workshop on “Crosstalk between Nucleus and Mitochondria in Human Disease” (CrossMitoNus) in Seville, Spain has been postponed to 22–25 March 2022. The event will take place at the Research Scientific Centre Isla de la Cartuja (cicCartuja). We know this is a difficult time for you all, but we are happily looking forward to get to know each other next spring, learn and present our work. Namely, we are pleased to inform you that most of our invited speakers and contributors have already confirmed their participation in CrossMitoNus next year so we can look forward to a similar excellent scientific program.

CrossMitoNus focuses on the communication that exists between mitochondria and cell nucleus, first described as retrograde signaling between mitochondrial and nuclear genomes. Recently, mitochondrial factors have been emerged as response elements to cell nucleus performance. Thus, unraveling the whole connectivity between the biomolecules involved in all this regulatory mitochondria-nucleus crosstalk and its relation to cell fate and physiological state is nowadays a major challenge. Indeed, as a supra-disciplinary field, it demands collaborative efforts involving Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Structural Biology and Cancer Biology, and new approaches in which experimental and computational methods are used.

The Scientific Program is organized in Plenary Lectures, together with sessions containing Oral Short Communications selected from the submitted abstracts. In this regard, an effort to give preference to young researchers will be made. The program leaves enough time for fruitful and lively discussions, especially during the following sessions: 1-min Flash Presentations, Poster Party and Round Table. The singularity of CrossMitoNus are the activities Guided Poster Tour and Speakers´ Corner, which will be held during poster sessions and breaks.

We saw a lot of enthusiasm for CrossMitoNus in the run up to the abstract deadline, and we are sorry you do not get a chance to present your submitted work this year. However, registrations will roll over to remain valid for the new dates and we eagerly await welcoming you to the CrossMitoNus next summer. You will be able to edit and update your abstracts if you wish ahead of a new 30 September 2021 abstract deadline, and then the Organising Commitee will select the oral communications. In addition, we have made updates to the website pages to reflect the new dates and information of CrossMitoNus.

CrossMitoNus will bring together about 100 PhD students and young postdocs, some of them have been awarded with grants offered by IUBMB, FEBS and Spanish National Societies, including Spanish Biophysical Society (SBE) and Spanish Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SEBBM). Spanish Groups of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (GERMN) and Chemical Biology (GEQB) from the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry (RSEQ) still offer Youth Travel Funds to support participation of their young members in this event.

The Organizing Committee thanks FEBS for providing us with its FEBS-branded website to use for displaying content, as well as for registration and abstract handling.

In summary, IUBMB Focused Meeting / FEBS Workshop CrossMitoNus will provide you with an excellent opportunity for a rewarding scientific and personal experience, including exchanging ideas with colleagues and establishing new acquaintances.

We now look forward to welcoming you to Seville in happier times in 2022!

Best regards,
Irene Díaz-Moreno,
Chair of the Organizing Committee
