EMBO Workshop | In situ structural biology: expanding the toolbox for structural cell biology
February 4 to February 7
This conference will take place at EMBL Heidelberg, with the option to attend virtually.
Conference Overview
There is an increasing awareness that mechanistic understanding of complex cellular functions and interactions requires structural knowledge of the macromolecules involved. Recent technological advances in several disciplines nurture the development of in situ structural biology approaches, that have separately started to provide structural information on molecules within the context of intact cells in order to fully grasp how they function in their native environment. These include cryo-electron microscopy and tomography (EM/ET), mass spectrometry-based proteomics, fluorescence and super-resolution light microscopy, protein structure prediction, multi-scale computational modelling and others.
This conference aims to bring together experts and early stage researchers from the separate disciplines, as well as researchers from different fields in the Life Sciences:
- to highlight recent methodological developments and to promote their usage as new “tools”
- for cell biology across scales: from molecules to organelles, cells and cell-cell interactions
- to provide a discussion platform for structural biology methods within the cellular context
- to stimulate discussions about how to meaningfully integrate data from different methods
- to define what types of biological questions can already be addressed using in situ structural biology and which might be approached in the future
Session topics
- Molecular machines and macromolecular assemblies
- Novel technologies 1: advanced imaging
- Organelles and compartments
